Doxorubicin is known as a wide range of clinical anticancer drug that generates oxygen radicals and has some side effects such as loss hair and vomiting. In particular, the treatment of cancer patients having heart diseases is limited, because doxorubicin causes myocardial cell damages. In this study, we examined the protective effect of chitosan oligosaccharide (MW ¡Â 1,000 Da) on myocardial damage by doxorubicin. As a result, chitosan oligosaccharide prevented cell death and increased the GSH (glutathione) content and GST (glutathione-S-transferase) enzyme activity in a concentration-dependent manner induced by doxorubicin. In addition, the activity of SOD (superoxide dismutase) was higher in chitosan oligosccharide-treated groups than doxorubicin-alone group. The results showed that chitosan oligosccharide may lessen myocardial cell damage caused by doxorubicin. Therefore, present investigation demonstrates that chitosan oligosaccharide may be used as an effective protective agent for cancer patients that cured by doxorubicin.
